Betting with OPay in Nigeria
Updated: · Bookmaker Blog editorial team
You do not need an international card to bet in Nigeria. Licensed bookmakers are built around local payments, and OPay is one of the most popular ways to deposit. This guide explains how OPay deposits and withdrawals work, the alternatives (PalmPay, Moniepoint, bank transfer and USSD), the limits that can block a payment, and how to avoid the scams aimed at bettors.
Use only operators licensed in Nigeria by a state regulator. Read our guide to licensed betting in Nigeria to check a licence before you deposit.
We are verifying which operators hold a valid licence here. The list will appear once our checks are complete.
How to deposit with OPay
Nigerian betting sites accept OPay in two ways.
Option 1: Transfer to the account number on the deposit page
This is the most common method.
- Log in to your betting account and choose Deposit, then Bank transfer or OPay.
- The site shows an account number, often at a partner bank. Some sites give each customer a personal deposit account; others create a new one for each deposit.
- In the OPay app, choose Transfer → To Bank and enter the account number.
- Check the account name that appears before you send. It should be the operator's name or its payment provider's name together with the operator's.
- Enter the amount and confirm with your PIN. Deposits usually show in your betting account within minutes.
Option 2: Pay with OPay at checkout
Some operators offer a direct OPay option. You choose OPay on the deposit page, enter your phone number and approve the payment in the OPay app. Again, check the merchant name before you approve.
Keep the OPay receipt until the money appears in your betting account. Its transaction reference is what support will ask for if a deposit goes missing.
How to withdraw
- Open Withdraw in your betting account.
- Choose a bank account or wallet in the same name as your betting account. Payouts to someone else's account are blocked.
- Most operators ask you to verify your identity before the first withdrawal, usually with your NIN or BVN and an ID document. Do it early to avoid delays.
Most withdrawals arrive within minutes to a few hours. If a withdrawal is marked as paid but has not arrived, contact the operator's support with the withdrawal reference.
Other ways to pay
- PalmPay and Moniepoint work like OPay: transfer to the account number shown on the deposit page, or approve a direct payment in the app.
- Bank transfer from any Nigerian bank app works the same way and is accepted almost everywhere.
- USSD lets you deposit from a basic phone without mobile data. Use your bank's USSD code, or OPay's (*955#), PalmPay's (*861#) or Moniepoint's (*5573#). Your network may charge a small fee per USSD session.
- Debit cards (Verve, Mastercard, Visa) are accepted by most licensed operators.
Limits that can block a payment
- Your wallet's KYC tier. OPay, PalmPay and Moniepoint set daily transfer limits and a maximum balance by verification level. Linking your BVN or NIN and completing the in-app checks raises them. The current limits are shown in your app.
- New phone, new limit. Under a Central Bank of Nigeria rule, transactions are capped at ₦20,000 for the first 24 hours after you activate a banking or wallet app on a new device.
- The operator's own limits. Each betting site sets a minimum deposit and maximum withdrawal. Check its payments page before you deposit.
Taxes
Nigeria's 2025 tax reform took effect on 1 January 2026. The Nigeria Tax Act lists stakes among items exempt from VAT, so your stake itself is not charged VAT.
Winnings can be taxed at state level. In Lagos State, licensed operators deduct a 5% withholding tax from winnings at payout and pay it to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. Other states may apply their own rules. Any deduction must appear in your transaction history. If you see a "fee" you cannot find in the operator's terms, ask support for the legal basis in writing.
Avoid payment scams
Deposit only through the operator's official website or app. "Funding agents" on WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram who offer to top up your account, or who ask you to send money to a personal account to "unlock" winnings, are scammers.
- Check the account name before every transfer. If it shows a person's name instead of the operator or its payment provider, cancel.
- Never share your PIN, password or OTP. No operator, bank or fintech will ask for them.
- Ignore "customer care" accounts that message you first on social media. Contact support only through the operator's official app or website.
- There are no "fixed matches". Anyone selling guaranteed results is running a scam.
Bet only what you can afford
Instant transfers make it easy to top up again after a loss. Set a deposit limit in your betting account, keep betting money separate from money for rent, school fees and food, and never borrow to bet. Our bankroll management guide explains how to size stakes so a losing run does not empty your account.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fund my betting account with OPay?
Start the deposit on the betting site. Most sites show an account number to transfer to: in the OPay app, choose Transfer → To Bank, enter that number and check that the account name belongs to the operator or its payment provider before you send. Some sites also let you pay directly with OPay and approve the payment in the app.
Why was my OPay deposit not credited?
Most deposits arrive within minutes. If yours has not, check that you sent the exact amount to the account number shown for that deposit, and keep the transaction receipt. Send the receipt to the operator's support through its official app or website, never to an 'agent' on social media.
Can I withdraw my winnings to OPay?
Yes, at operators that support it. Licensed operators pay out only to a bank account or wallet in the same name as your betting account, and they usually ask you to verify your identity before the first withdrawal.
Why can I only send ₦20,000 after changing my phone?
A Central Bank of Nigeria rule caps transactions at ₦20,000 for the first 24 hours after you activate a banking or wallet app on a new device. The cap lifts automatically after 24 hours.
Is there tax on betting winnings in Nigeria?
In Lagos State, licensed operators deduct a 5% withholding tax from winnings at payout and pay it to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. Rules in other states differ. Your operator must show any deduction in your transaction history.
